How do you recalibrate ADAS?
What you need to know is that most ADAS systems operate using a camera mounted to the windshield. Calibration consists of bringing the ADAS system back to the original manufacturer settings. This process is crucial as the front facing cameras are displaced during a windshield replacement. Your safety depends on it.
Here are the systems most often used by car manufacturers:
LKA : LANE KEEP ASSIST
This system corrects a lane change that is not signaled by the driver. This system brings the vehicle back into its designated lines.
LDW : LANE DEPARTURE WARNING SYSTEM
This system notifies the driver, by sound and / or vibration, when the vehicle is preparing to make an unsignaled lane change.
FCA : FORWARD COLLISION ALERT
This system detects the distance between the driver's vehicle and the vehicle in front of them. When the driver approaches too close to the vehicle in front of them, the system will notify the driver by a visual and / or audible warning in order to prevent a collision.
CMBS : COLLISION MITIGATION BRAKING SYSTEM
This system acts in the same way as the FCA. In addition to notifying the driver, it will apply the brakes automatically if the driver does not do so following the alert.
ACC : ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
Adaptive Cruise Control maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead by automatically adjusting vehicle speed.
TYPES OF CALIBRATIONS AVAILABLE
The calibration process may vary from one vehicle to another. A vehicle may require a static and / or dynamic calibration. For safety reasons, it is necessary for a certified technician to perform the calibration service as it requires specialized tools.
STATIC CALIBRATION
Static calibration is performed in-store within a controlled environment and is an exercise as complex as it is important. With the help of electronic devices, a laser and targets specific to each model, the vehicle is positioned by the technician according to the predetermined standards set by the vehicle manufacturers.
DYNAMIC CALIBRATION
During a dynamic calibration, we use a portable electronic device directly plugged into the OBD II port of the vehicle. To perform this type of calibration, two people are required and the vehicle must meet certain conditions such as driving at specified constant speeds over a certain distance and in favorable weather conditions. In addition, lines drawn on the road must be clearly visible. The vehicle is put into ‘learning mode’ and uses reliable benchmarks to use as driving aids.
STATIC AND DYNAMIC CALIBRATION
It is worth noting that some vehicles (including vehicles within the Honda family) require both types of calibration to be performed in order to have the camera recalibrated.
WHAT IS THE COST ASSOCIATED TO HAVING MY CAMERA CALIBRATED?
Today’s windshield replacements are becoming increasingly sophisticated due to today's technology, and it is imperative to entrust your windshield replacements to qualified technicians that use the most advanced and reliable equipment on the market in order to ensure your safety, so you can travel with peace of mind.
The cost may vary depending on the vehicle and the type of calibration required. Most insurers* cover the cost of calibration. We will advise you during our quoting process if your vehicle requires calibration.
* May vary by provincial law and your insurance policy.
